1.5-2 hours from Mersing
March - October
Duty-Free Island

Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman), located off the southeastern coast of Pahang, is one of Malaysia's most iconic island destinations. Once named by TIME Magazine as one of the world's most beautiful islands, Tioman continues to captivate visitors with its dramatic granite peaks, ancient rainforests, and crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life.

Unlike many resort islands that cater to a single type of traveler, Tioman offers something for everyone. Budget backpackers find affordable chalets in laid-back villages, luxury seekers discover boutique resorts nestled in jungle coves, and adventure enthusiasts have world-class diving, jungle trekking, and waterfall exploration at their doorstep.

As a duty-free island, Tioman also offers the unique perk of shopping for alcohol, tobacco, and chocolates at significantly reduced prices — a pleasant bonus to complement the natural beauty all around you.

Why Travelers Love Tioman

What sets Tioman apart is its sheer diversity. The island is large enough to have distinct villages, each with its own character and appeal, yet small enough that you can explore different areas during your stay. From the bustling Tekek village with its shops and restaurants to the serene Juara beach on the east coast, every corner of Tioman tells a different story.

The underwater world here is truly spectacular. Tioman sits within a marine park, and its waters are home to vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, reef sharks, and an incredible variety of tropical fish. Whether you're a certified diver exploring deeper sites or a snorkeler floating over shallow reefs, the marine life will leave you in awe.

Getting There

Ferries to Tioman Island depart from two main jetties on the mainland: Mersing Jetty in Johor and Tanjung Gemok Jetty in Pahang. The ferry journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the operator, sea conditions, and which village on Tioman you're heading to.

Several ferry operators run daily services during the operating season (March to October), with departures typically in the morning and early afternoon. During peak season, additional trips may be added to meet demand. It's wise to to secure your preferred departure time.

How to Reach the Jetty

  • From Kuala Lumpur: Drive approximately 4-5 hours via the North-South Expressway to Mersing, or take a bus from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Mersing town.
  • From Johor Bahru: Mersing Jetty is about 2.5 hours north of JB by car. You can also take a bus from Larkin Terminal to Mersing.
  • Parking: Both Mersing Jetty and Tanjung Gemok have parking facilities where you can leave your car for the duration of your island stay.

Where to Stay

Tioman offers a wide range of accommodation across its various villages. From luxury jungle resorts like Japamala and Tunamaya to budget-friendly chalets in Salang and Air Batang (ABC), there's something for every traveler and budget.

Each village has its own personality. Tekek is the main hub with the most facilities and the island's only ATM. Salang, at the northern tip, is known for laid-back vibes and excellent snorkeling right off the beach. Air Batang (ABC) is the backpacker favorite. Juara, on the quieter east coast, has a long stretch of beautiful beach and is a turtle conservation site.

During peak season (school holidays, June-August), is strongly recommended as popular resorts and chalets fill up quickly.

Things to Do

Scuba Diving

Tioman is one of Malaysia's premier diving destinations. With over 20 dive sites around the island, divers can explore everything from shallow coral gardens to dramatic underwater rock formations. Popular sites include Renggis Island, Tiger Reef, and the Labas wreck. Several PADI-certified dive centers offer courses for beginners and guided dives for the experienced. You can through Dipsea to find the best option for your level.

Snorkeling

You don't need to be a diver to enjoy Tioman's underwater world. Excellent snorkeling spots are accessible from many beaches, particularly around Salang and Renggis Island. The marine park's protected waters mean you'll encounter colorful coral, tropical fish, and if you're lucky, sea turtles gliding gracefully below.

Jungle Trekking

Tioman's interior is covered in ancient rainforest, offering some of the best jungle trekking on any Malaysian island. The cross-island trek from Tekek to Juara is a classic route that takes about 2-3 hours through dense jungle. Along the way, keep an eye out for monitor lizards, monkeys, hornbills, and stunning tropical plants. Several waterfalls offer refreshing stops along the trails.

Beach Life

With beaches scattered around the island, you're never far from a stretch of sand. Juara Beach on the east coast is arguably the most beautiful, with its long, wide shoreline and powerful waves. The west coast beaches in Salang and ABC offer calmer waters perfect for swimming. For ultimate seclusion, hire a boat to reach hidden coves that few tourists visit.

Relax and Recharge

Sometimes the best thing to do on an island is nothing at all. Grab a duty-free drink, settle into a hammock, and watch the sunset paint the sky. Tioman's natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere make it an ideal destination for those looking to truly unwind and disconnect from the everyday hustle.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Season

March - October

Sunny skies, calm seas, and excellent underwater visibility. The best conditions for diving, snorkeling, and beach activities. June to August is the busiest period coinciding with school holidays.

Monsoon Season

November - February

Strong winds, rough seas, and heavy rainfall. Most resorts close for the season and all ferry services are suspended. The island is essentially inaccessible during these months.

Pro tip: For the best experience with fewer crowds, visit in March-May or September-October. You'll enjoy great weather, better availability, and potentially lower accommodation rates compared to the June-August peak.
