Redang Island

Getting to Redang Island

Your guide to reaching Terengganu's premier resort island—usually with transfers included in your package.

Merang Jetty
45-60 min journey
March - October

Getting to Redang Island is typically straightforward because most accommodation packages include boat transfers. Unlike some islands where you arrange your own transport, Redang's package system means you'll arrive at the jetty, check in with your resort's representative, and be on your way.

Merang Jetty: The Main Gateway

Most Redang boats depart from Merang Jetty (also called Shahbandar Jetty), located about 30-45 minutes north of Kuala Terengganu city. This is the primary departure point for most resorts.

The jetty is well-organized with separate counters for different resorts. When you arrive, look for your resort's signage or staff. They'll check your booking, collect the marine park fee, and direct you to the correct boat.

Package System = Less Hassle

One of Redang's advantages is the all-inclusive package approach. Your transfers, accommodation, and often activities are pre-arranged. Just show up at the right time and everything is handled.

The Boat Journey

The speedboat crossing takes approximately 45-60 minutes from Merang—similar to the journey time for nearby Perhentian. The boats are comfortable, covered speedboats carrying 20-40 passengers. Life jackets are provided and mandatory during the crossing.

The journey can be scenic on calm days, with views of the coastline giving way to open sea before the island appears on the horizon. On rougher days, the ride can be bumpy—those prone to seasickness should take precautions.

Getting to Merang Jetty

From Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG)

The drive takes 40-50 minutes. Many packages include airport transfers, or you can arrange a taxi/Grab. If your package doesn't include transfer, expect to pay around RM90-120 for a taxi.

From Kuala Terengganu City

About 30-45 minutes drive north. Grab services are available, or your package may include city pickup.

Driving Yourself

Parking is available at Merang Jetty (around RM20/day). The jetty is well-signposted from the main road.

Weather & Safety

Monsoon Season: November - February

Redang closes completely during monsoon season. All resorts shut down and no boats operate. Plan your visit for March-October only.

During the open season, weather-related delays are uncommon but possible. If seas are too rough, departures may be delayed until conditions improve. Resorts will keep you informed and make alternative arrangements if necessary.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

Confirm Everything

Before your trip, confirm jetty location, departure time, and what's included in your package. Your resort should send this information.

Arrive Early

Get to the jetty 30-45 minutes before departure. This allows time for check-in, fee payment, and boarding.

Bring Cash

While packages cover most costs, bring cash for extras like diving, souvenirs, and tips. Card acceptance on the island is limited.

Motion Sickness Prep

If you're prone to seasickness, take medication before boarding. The 45-60 minute crossing can be bouncy on wavy days.
