Getting to Redang Island is typically straightforward because most accommodation packages include boat transfers. Unlike some islands where you arrange your own transport, Redang's package system means you'll arrive at the jetty, check in with your resort's representative, and be on your way.
Merang Jetty: The Main Gateway
Most Redang boats depart from Merang Jetty (also called Shahbandar Jetty), located about 30-45 minutes north of Kuala Terengganu city. This is the primary departure point for most resorts.
The jetty is well-organized with separate counters for different resorts. When you arrive, look for your resort's signage or staff. They'll check your booking, collect the marine park fee, and direct you to the correct boat.
Package System = Less Hassle
One of Redang's advantages is the all-inclusive package approach. Your transfers, accommodation, and often activities are pre-arranged. Just show up at the right time and everything is handled.
The Boat Journey
The speedboat crossing takes approximately 45-60 minutes from Merang—similar to the journey time for nearby Perhentian. The boats are comfortable, covered speedboats carrying 20-40 passengers. Life jackets are provided and mandatory during the crossing.
The journey can be scenic on calm days, with views of the coastline giving way to open sea before the island appears on the horizon. On rougher days, the ride can be bumpy—those prone to seasickness should take precautions.
