Where to Stay on Perhentian

From lively backpacker beaches to peaceful resort hideaways—choose the perfect base for your diving adventure.

Beach Living

Choosing where to stay on Perhentian Islands is one of the most important decisions for your trip. Unlike single-beach islands, Perhentian offers distinctly different experiences depending on which island and beach you choose. Your accommodation choice will shape your entire island experience.

The Big Decision: Besar vs Kecil

Think of the two islands as having completely different personalities. Perhentian Besar (Big Island) is the mature, relaxed sibling—quiet beaches, comfortable resorts, and a focus on diving and nature. Perhentian Kecil (Small Island) is the younger, livelier one—budget accommodation, backpacker vibes, beach bars, and social energy.

Neither is objectively "better"—it depends entirely on what you're looking for. Couples seeking romance often prefer Besar. Backpackers and budget travellers usually gravitate toward Kecil. Divers might choose either based on which dive center they prefer—see our Perhentian diving guide for the top sites and schools. Still deciding between Perhentian and other islands? Compare it side-by-side with Kapas.

What to Expect

Set realistic expectations. Even the nicest accommodation on Perhentian is more "island rustic" than "luxury resort." Electricity can be generator-powered, hot water may be solar-heated (or absent), WiFi is slow, and facilities are basic compared to mainland standards.

But that's part of the charm. You're here for the diving, the snorkeling, the beaches, and the escape from modern life. The accommodation is simply a place to rest between underwater adventures.

Types of Accommodation

Budget Chalets (RM50-150/night)

Mostly found on Kecil, these basic wooden chalets offer beds, fans, and shared (sometimes private) bathrooms. Some are literally on the beach. Perfect for backpackers who just need a place to sleep between diving and socializing.

Mid-Range Chalets (RM150-350/night)

A step up with air conditioning, private bathrooms, and often hot water. Available on both islands. These offer a good balance of comfort and value. Many include breakfast or meal packages.

Resorts (RM350-800+/night)

Primarily on Besar, these offer the most comfortable stays. Expect proper beds, reliable AC, decent restaurants, dive centers, and better facilities. Some offer packages including diving, meals, and transfers.

Dive Resorts

Several accommodations specialize in diving packages. These bundle accommodation with multiple dives, meals, and sometimes courses. If diving is your main focus, these often offer the best value and convenience—our full diving guide covers which sites match each experience level.

Tips for Choosing Your Stay

Consider Your Priorities

Want nightlife? Long Beach. Want quiet? Besar or Coral Bay. Want best snorkeling from shore? Coral Bay. Want diving convenience? Near a dive center. Let your priorities guide your choice.

Book Early for Peak Season

June-August and school holidays see huge demand. Popular Long Beach spots book out weeks ahead. Check the best time to visit Perhentian guide before locking in dates.

Think About Meals

Long Beach has many restaurants so meal packages are optional. On Besar and Coral Bay, options are limited—meal packages often make sense for convenience and value.

Check Dive Packages

If diving is your main activity, dive resort packages often offer excellent value. Bundled accommodation, dives, meals, and equipment can work out cheaper than booking separately.

Solo Travelers

Long Beach is perfect for meeting people. Many chalets have common areas and beach bars where travelers gather. The social atmosphere makes solo travel easy and fun.

Couples & Families

Besar offers more privacy and better facilities. Coral Bay works for couples wanting Kecil without the party scene. For families with young kids, Besar's quieter beaches are ideal.
