Getting to Langkawi

Your guide to ferry services from Kuala Perlis, Kuala Kedah, and Penang — multiple routes to reach the Jewel of Kedah.

3 Departure Points
1.5 - 2.5 hour journey
Year-round service

Getting to Langkawi by sea is a popular and scenic option, especially for travellers coming from northern Malaysia. With three ferry departure points and frequent daily services, the ferry journey is convenient, affordable, and part of the Langkawi experience.

Kuala Perlis: The Most Popular Route

Kuala Perlis Jetty is the most popular departure point for Langkawi, offering the shortest sea crossing at approximately 1.5 hours. Located at the northernmost tip of Peninsular Malaysia, it's the closest mainland point to Langkawi. Express ferries depart frequently throughout the day, typically from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

The terminal is modern and well-equipped with ticket counters, a waiting lounge, food stalls, and prayer rooms. Parking is available nearby for those driving to the jetty. Most visitors from the northern region prefer this route for its convenience and frequency.

Kuala Kedah: The Alternative

Kuala Kedah Jetty, located near Alor Setar (the capital of Kedah), offers an alternative route to Langkawi. The crossing takes approximately 1.75 hours. While departures are less frequent than Kuala Perlis, this route is more convenient for those coming from the Alor Setar area or travelling via the North-South Expressway.

The jetty is situated at the mouth of the Kedah River, and the departure area has basic facilities including ticket counters, a small waiting area, and food options nearby.

Penang: The Scenic Route

For travellers coming from Penang, a direct ferry service connects Swettenham Pier in George Town to Langkawi. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours and is the most scenic of the three routes, cruising through the Straits of Malacca with views of several small islands along the way.

This route is ideal for those combining a Penang and Langkawi itinerary. Services are less frequent (typically 1-2 departures daily), so advance booking is recommended, especially during peak season.

Tip: Consider Flying Too

If you're coming from Kuala Lumpur or further south, flying may be more practical. Langkawi International Airport receives direct flights from KL (1 hour), Penang (35 min), and Singapore (1.5 hours). Budget airlines offer competitive fares, especially when booked early.

The Ferry Experience

Langkawi ferries are modern, air-conditioned vessels that can carry several hundred passengers. Seating is comfortable with assigned seats on most services. The ferries are significantly larger and more comfortable than the small speedboats used for smaller East Coast islands.

Entertainment and refreshments are limited onboard, so bring your own snacks, drinks, and something to pass the time. The air conditioning can be quite cold, so a light jacket is useful. Most ferries have basic toilet facilities onboard.

All ferries arrive at the Kuah Jetty Terminal in Langkawi, which is well-equipped with taxi services, car rental counters, tourism information, and duty-free shops. From Kuah, it's about a 25-minute drive to Pantai Cenang, the island's most popular area.

Getting to the Ferry Terminals

To Kuala Perlis Jetty

From Alor Setar, Kuala Perlis is about 45 minutes by car via the Changlun-Kuala Perlis Highway. From Penang, it's approximately 2 hours via the North-South Expressway. Parking is available at the jetty.

To Kuala Kedah Jetty

Kuala Kedah is about 15 minutes from Alor Setar city centre. It's accessible via the North-South Expressway with ample parking at the terminal.

To Penang (Swettenham Pier)

Swettenham Pier is located in George Town, easily accessible by taxi or Grab from anywhere on Penang Island. Limited parking is available nearby; using ride-hailing is recommended.

Weather & Safety

One of Langkawi's advantages over East Coast islands is year-round ferry service. Thanks to its sheltered position in the Andaman Sea, ferries operate throughout the year, including during the West Coast wet season (May-September).

Year-Round Access

Unlike islands on the East Coast that close during monsoon season, Langkawi remains accessible by ferry all year. The Andaman Sea is generally calmer than the South China Sea, though occasional rough weather during the wet season may cause minor delays.

Wet Season Note: May - September

While ferry services continue year-round, the wet season may bring afternoon thunderstorms and occasional rough seas. Delays are possible but rare. The island remains fully operational and many visitors prefer this period for lower prices and fewer crowds.

On the Ferry

Langkawi ferries are large, modern vessels built for passenger comfort and safety. Life-saving equipment is available onboard and crew are trained in safety procedures. Remain seated during the journey, keep belongings secure, and follow crew instructions.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

Arrive Early

Get to the jetty at least 30-45 minutes before departure. This gives you time to collect tickets, navigate the terminal, and board comfortably.

Book Peak Season Early

During December-January, school holidays, and long weekends, ferries can sell out. Book your tickets in advance to secure your preferred departure time.

Bring a Light Jacket

Ferry cabins are heavily air-conditioned and can feel quite cold, especially on the longer routes. A light jacket or shawl will keep you comfortable.

Arrange Onward Transport

All ferries arrive at Kuah Jetty, about 25 minutes from Pantai Cenang. Arrange a taxi, book a car rental at the terminal, or have your hotel arrange a pickup.

Check the Kuala Perlis Route First

Kuala Perlis has the most frequent departures and shortest crossing time. Unless you're specifically coming from Penang or Alor Setar area, it's usually the best option.

Start Duty-Free Shopping at Kuah

The Kuah Jetty area has duty-free shops right at the terminal. You can start your shopping immediately upon arrival or grab some bargains before your return ferry.
