Getting to Kapas Island

Your guide to the boat journey from Marang Jetty—one of the quickest and most scenic island transfers on Malaysia's East Coast.

Marang Jetty
15-20 min journey
March - October

Getting to Kapas Island is refreshingly simple. Unlike some Malaysian islands that require hour-long ferry rides or flights, Kapas is just a quick 15-minute speedboat hop from the mainland. This accessibility is one of the island's greatest appeals—you spend less time traveling and more time enjoying paradise.

Marang Jetty: Your Starting Point

All boats to Kapas Island depart from Marang Jetty (Jeti Marang), a working fishing jetty in the small town of Marang. Located about 30 minutes south of Kuala Terengganu city, the jetty serves as the gateway to Kapas Island and to its quieter neighbour, Gemia Island.

The jetty itself is modest but functional. You'll find ticket counters, basic toilet facilities, and a few small shops where you can grab snacks, drinks, or last-minute supplies. There's a covered waiting area where you can shelter from the sun while waiting for your boat.

Parking is available at the jetty for those driving. Most visitors either drive themselves, take a Grab from Kuala Terengganu, or arrange transfers through their accommodation.

The Boat Journey

The crossing to Kapas takes approximately 15-20 minutes by speedboat, depending on sea conditions. It's a scenic journey—as the mainland recedes behind you, Kapas Island grows from a hazy outline into a lush green paradise fringed with white sand.

The boats used are typically small speedboats that carry 8-15 passengers. They're safe and well-maintained, and you'll be provided with a life jacket to wear during the crossing. The journey is usually smooth, though you might experience some bumps if the sea is slightly choppy.

For those prone to seasickness, the good news is that the journey is short. If you're concerned, consider taking motion sickness medication before departure and sit near the middle of the boat where movement is minimized.

Boat Schedules

During the operating season (March to October), boats typically run multiple times daily. Morning departures usually start between 8:30-10:00 AM, with additional trips around midday and in the afternoon (typically 4:00-5:00 PM for the last boat).

However, schedules can vary based on several factors: weather conditions, tides, demand, and the specific operator. Unlike scheduled ferries to larger islands, Kapas boats often operate more flexibly.

Tip: Check Schedules in Advance

Boat schedules can change. It's always wise to confirm current departure times before your trip, especially if you're arriving from far away or have connecting flights.

Weather & Safety

Safety is always the priority for boat operators. The crossing to Kapas is generally safe and pleasant during the operating season, but weather can affect services.

Weather Cancellations

If conditions are deemed unsafe—rough seas, storms, or poor visibility—boat trips may be delayed or cancelled. This is for your safety, and operators will typically offer rescheduling options or refunds. It's rare for cancellations to happen during peak season, but occasional storms can occur.

Monsoon Season: November - February

The island is essentially closed during these months. Seas are rough, weather is unpredictable, and boat services are suspended. Most resorts also close for the season. Plan your visit between March and October.

On the Boat

All licensed operators provide life jackets, which you'll be asked to wear during the crossing. Listen to the crew's instructions and stay seated while the boat is moving. Keep belongings secure as water spray can occur, especially on windy days.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

Arrive Early

Get to the jetty at least 30 minutes before departure. This gives you time to park, collect tickets, use facilities, and board comfortably without rushing.

Pack Light

There are no vehicles on Kapas. You'll carry your bags from the boat to your accommodation on sandy paths. A backpack or small bag works best.

Bring Cash

There are no ATMs on Kapas Island and card acceptance is limited. Bring enough cash for your entire stay, including meals and activities.

Check Weather

Keep an eye on weather forecasts before your trip. If conditions look uncertain, contact your operator or accommodation to confirm boat schedules.

Waterproof Your Valuables

Water spray can occur on speedboat crossings. Keep electronics and important documents in a waterproof bag or pouch.

Confirm Return Timing

On arrival, confirm the schedule for return boats, especially if you're doing a day trip. The last boat typically leaves around 4-5 PM.
